- Derma ColLAGE – Collage of multi-level hydration with collagen matrix reconstruction
“Water is the driving force of all nature” – these words by Leonardo da Vinci perfectly describe its role. It is an essential fuel for the life of every cell. Skin plays a key role in maintaining proper hydration. It exists in two forms: structural and migratory. The former forms the structural element of the skin and is bound to hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. The latter wanders in the layers of the epidermis. If there is too little water, the skin’s moisture-binding and barrier functions are disrupted. The epidermis loses elasticity and suppleness, becomes dry and rough, which increases susceptibility to allergies and irritation. Disruption affects fibroblast function as well as collagen and elastin synthesis, leading to accelerated aging processes.
“Water Supplement” for the Skin
Derma ColLAGE is an authorial, multi-level treatment providing accumulated and long-lasting moisturizing and collagen matrix rebuilding action. Another dermocosmetic supplement created by ARKANA for every skin type. It plays the role of a skin electrolyte, ensuring the delivery of water to every layer of skin and cells, and delivering valuable hyaluronic acid. It is a natural booster for collagen.
Its action is based on an authorial combination of MARSturizer™ – a unique regulator maintaining the skin’s water balance, NIO-OLIGO 3^D, exceptional hyaluronic acid encapsulated in niosomes, and Col-Frag Remastered™ – an innovative ingredient imitating a fragment of human type I collagen. Additional reinforcement was achieved thanks to cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which protects against water loss from the epidermis.
Out-of-This-World Hydration
Human skin is naturally hydrated, but various factors—including external ones such as air and UV radiation—cause it to undergo dehydration and drying. How to protect it?
Help comes from a new, cosmic substance: MARSturizer™, whose name and action refer to Mars. Four billion years ago, Mars was a planet rich in water. Wind and UV radiation unfortunately dried up its surface. Proof of its former glory is the Martian meteorite “Black Beauty,” in which water was found.
The inspiration for creating MARSturizer™ came from astrobiology research studying the limits of life and the possibility of inhabiting other planets. They found a place called Rio Tinto, a red river in southern Spain, which gained scientific interest due to the presence of extremophilic anaerobic bacteria living in acidic water. Dried-up sub-surface riverbeds contain iron and sulfur minerals, which feed these bacteria. These extreme conditions in the river are analogous to Martian conditions.
Scientists compared the chemical composition of the water in which Martian rocks of Meridiani Planum were deposited in the past to Rio Tinto. Further steps involved isolating the bacteria living there and using them to create an innovative active substance that creates an ideal aqueous environment and increases cell survival. This prompted the R&D department of ARKANA to use MARSturizer™ in innovative moisturizing products. Thanks to the unique action of this “cosmetic electrolyte,” correct skin calcium levels and optimal water distribution in the skin are maintained.
Key to its action is boosting genes associated with NMF and supporting the synthesis of endogenous glycerol—a natural humectant. The next step is increasing keratinocyte vitality, regulating the formation of new epidermal cells, keratinization processes, and supporting skin regeneration. MARSturizer™ strengthens skin barrier functions through interactions with e-cadherins, proteins affecting epidermal cohesion and cell-to-cell connections. It also supports genes responsible for synthesizing skin lipids and strengthens skin protection against IR and UV, which destroy cell DNA. The moisturizing effect of a cream with MARSturizer™ is noticeable immediately—just one hour after the first application, skin water content increases by over 63% with a simultaneous TEWL decrease of 16%.
An Irreplaceable Moisturizing Elixir
Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hygroscopic molecules found in nature—it has the ability to bind water in amounts up to 1000 times its own mass. In a properly functioning stratum corneum, it is a factor participating in maintaining its hydration, similar to NMF and lipids.
Furthermore, hyaluronic acid can regulate the mechanical properties of the stratum corneum due to its interaction with phospholipids from the lamellar structures of the stratum corneum. In proper skin, HA is located in the papillary layer, collagen microfibrils, between collagen fibers and elastic fibers.
In skin, hyaluronan—constituting a significant part of the extracellular space—affects moisture, structure, and elasticity of the skin. It also determines the state of skin moisture. Spaces between epidermal cells are filled with hyaluronan, which draws water from the dermis itself. Furthermore, hyaluronan provides transport for ions and nutrients in the skin.
Hyaluronic acid controls skin hydration also during regeneration and inflammatory conditions. Importantly, hyaluronic acid, similarly to other glycosaminoglycans, takes part in fibrogenesis processes, mainly in stabilizing collagen fibres, playing a role in tissue formation, spatial orientation of cells, as well as the protein balance of collagen and elastin.
